Canonical – the financial bakers of Ubuntu – have developed a diagnostics software kit, installable on a USB thumb drive, to help users identify what bits of their hardware will work with Ubuntu and what won’t.
The 20 minute scan will range from testing WiFi, sound, video card, microphones to other services such as integrated webcams.

This service isn’t just to help potential new users decide on a upgrade, it’s also to help fix bugs.
By people using the tool, Ubuntu can gather information on what hardware works – and what doesn’t - allowing it to get on with the job of making it work.
The software is aimed to be available around Ubuntu 9.10’s launch.
