LastPass - free, Secure, Password sync

View Comments

You know the score: You use, blog, post and wax lyrical on a million different websites and that means lots of different accounts and, thusly, lots of different passwords too.

So many passwords fast become a chore to remember; writing passwords down is a big no-no and using the same password on each account is a tad foolish. Initiatives such as OpenID and cross-web Facebook login are helping to ease this burden but have yet to reach into every nook and cranny of the internet. I rely heavily on Opera’s ‘magic wand’ login, Firefox’s super auto-fill & a similar plug-in for Chrome but this isn’t ideal: What if I want my passwords to sync between browsers?

Enter LastPast - the self proclaimed “…last password manager you’ll ever need”

OMG! Reader! xfact is a big cheerleader of the app and it’s relatively easy to see why; a triad of win, LastPass is secure, cross platform and, for the win, cross browser too.

Browser support

LastPass supports almost all major browsers: -

  • Mozilla based browsers (Firefox, Seamonkey, Flock [2.6] etc.)
  • Chromium based browsers (Chrome, Chromium, Flock 3)
  • Internet Explorer
  • Safari
  • Opera (via a bookmarklet)

Secure encryption of passwords

You needn’t worry about any grody goon gaining access to your passwords for the only thing that gets stored on LastPass' servers is a big encrypted ball of your passwords and the sites they belong to. Only you have the encryption key to your passwords and, better still, all encryption and decrypting of passwords takes place on your computer.

No-one but you has access to your passwords. My LastPass Vault - Google Chrome

Secure encrypted note taker

Oh yes. LastPass also lets you encrypt and store other confidential text in your password vault such as notes or contact data.

Form Filling

LastPass can store and auto-fill form information, a feature that whilst already baked into most browsers gives you cross-platform cross-browser syncing of that data.

Access LastPass anywhere, anytime

You just need to remember the one master password and the registration mail ID, and your passwords can always be with you wherever you go. At a friends? Just install the add-on, enter your ID and password and all your passwords are right there for you.

Download

LastPass can be downloaded from the Lastpass website @ https://lastpass.com/

Super duper thanks to xfact

Get Safari’s new ‘reader’ feature in Chrome & Firefox

View Comments

Apple pushed out Safari 5 earlier today. With it came a new feature called ‘Reader’ that, in the words of Apple themselves,: -

"…removes annoying ads and other visual distractions from online articles. So you get the whole story and nothing but the story. It works like this: As you browse the web, Safari detects if you're on a web page with an article. Click the Reader icon in the Smart Address Field, and the article appears instantly in one continuous, clutter-free view. You see every page of the article — whether two or twenty. “

Now that sounds good to me. Sadly the feature refused to work  when we tried Safari 5 out via Wine earlier today but the ‘that sounds good to me’ factor stayed with me; Just how could I get this functionality in Chrome or Firefox?

Easily it turns out. I literally spent about 3 minutes searching before I had the following extensions installed and running.

Annoyingly the Chrome plug-in removes images too, which the Reader feature in Safari doesn’t but it remains a great way to read articles without any visual framing or distractions.

Rekonq to support Chrome extensions

View Comments

QT web browser Rekonq is to add support for Chrome extensions - allowing thousands of already-made extensions to run out-of-the-box – all thanks to the work of KDE developer Nikhil Marathe.

Rekonq, tentatively marked as Kubuntu 10.10’s default browser, is able to do this thanks to Google Chrome’s web-standards based extension API.

Rekonq will see the release of version 0.5 – which will lack extension support - later next month.

6 Google Chrome Ubuntu Themes (Radiance, Ambiance, Elementary, Dust etc)

View Comments
Despite Google Chrome/Chromium being able to use native GTK colouring the results are more often than not disappointing.

Thus getting Chrome to blend in with your desktop works best when using Chrome Themes.

Ubuntu Chrome Themes

Below are a selection of themes designed to 'match' some of the more popular Ubuntu GTK themes. Many look most effective when used with 'system borders'. To enable system borders in Chrome just right-click Chrome's window border and choose 'Use system title bar and borders'.

Radiance

The above themes look much nicer in Lucid if you use the following 'Lucid' scrollbars,

YouTube HTML5-ifer For Chrome Makes YouTube A Joy To Use

View Comments

Chrome extension "YouTube-HTML5-ifier" replaces the flash-based YouTube player with a HTML5 video tag - thus giving you native video playback without the need for a CPU hungry Flash plugin!

http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/8072/selection049.png

The extension can't show any flash-reliant extras that a video might have, such as annotations, but it does automatically load the best quality video.

Another nice feature thanks to HTML are the auto-fading controls - they only show on mouse over.

Issues
Sometimes videos don't seem to load so you're left staring a white box, other times a video will load but won't play sound until you pause/unpause. Not all videos can be HTML5-ized, either and embedded videos will still play via flash.

Minor quibbles which I'm sure will be addressed in future version of the plugin. All in all it's a worthwhile extension if you use YouTube a lot.

Official Chrome Extension Gallery Prepped, Not Yet Live

View Comments
Google are prepping an official extension gallery for add-ons to their popular browser.

https://chrome.google.com/extensions links no-where as of yet, but then neither did the ‘themes’ gallery to start with.

According to developers on the Chrome Groups list, extensions are due to hit Chrome's beta channel in early December so one could assume this gallery will launch around the same time.

A Google Shaped Chrome Fist?
One does wonder what the criterion for add-ons shown the extension gallery will be given no user submissions are currently allowed for the themes gallery. (That is unless you’re a well known artist or Mariah Carey).

Will the gallery be full of official Google Add-ons? Will they allow Ad-blockers? What about YouTube download extensions?

Check out the OMG! UBUNTU! list of 15 awesome Chrome extensions and then our list of 5 newer extensions worth trying!
