CoverGloobus & Gloobus Preview Come to Lucid

View Comments

Lucid users missing their fix of desktop album are and slick file previews need miss no-more – CoverGloobus & Gloobus-Preview are now available for Lucid via the relevant PPA’s.

Cover Gloobus

We’ve mentioned/loved/raved/enteradjectivehere about Gover-Gloobus a bazillion times in the past so seeing it come to Lucid is much appreciated.

The latest version is 1.7 and see’s the cover-art-come-controller work with more players.

Installation

  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gloobus-dev/covergloobus
  • sudo apt-get install covergloobus

Gloobus Preview

Gloobus Preview is, as the name suggests, a file previewer: You select a file, hit the space bar and the file is previewed super-quick. Videos, music, documents – pretty much everything can be previewed with Gloobus Preview. It works best when used in conjunction with Nautilus-Elementary so the instructions below also add and install it.

Installation

  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gloobus-dev/gloobus-preview
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:am-monkeyd/nautilus-elementary-ppa
  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gloobus-preview && sudo apt-get upgrade

How To Install Nautilus CoverFlow In Ubuntu

View Comments
Although a new name has yet to be decided for Nautilus-Elementary's CoverFlow view (don't forget to cast your vote on a new name in our poll) you're probably itching to try it out, huh?
Install Clutter View in Nautilus First up you need to grab the clutter dependencies. Download the following four .Deb files and install them. If you use 32bit Ubuntu Karmic libclutter-1.0-0_1.0.10-0ubuntu1~ricotz1_i386.deb libclutter-1.0-dev_1.0.10-0ubuntu1~ricotz1_i386.deb libclutter-gtk-0.10-0_0.10.2-1~ppa9.10+1_i386.deb libclutter-gtk-0.10-dev_0.10.2-1~ppa9.10+1_i386.deb If you use 64bit Ubuntu Karmic libclutter-1.0-0_1.0.10-0ubuntu1~ricotz1_amd64.deb libclutter-1.0-dev_1.0.10-0ubuntu1~ricotz1_amd64.deb libclutter-gtk-0.10-0_0.10.2-1~ppa9.10+1_amd64.deb libclutter-gtk-0.10-dev_0.10.2-1~ppa9.10+1_amd64.deb Nautilus Now we need to get the latest version of Nautilus-Elementary via the same route: -
  • cd
  • bzr branch lp:nautilus-elementary
  • cd nautilus-elementary
  • sudo aptitude build-dep nautilus
  • ./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr
  • make && sudo make install
Once that is all done you can restart nautilus (killall nautilus). Use it! Open up a folder (any one) and either hit CTRL+4 or enable the coverflow effect via View > Clutter View. If you click on the cover flow itself you can then slide through items using your mouse scroll wheel or left/right keyboard keys. Issues First of all remember that CoverFlow isn't included by default for a reason - it's Alpha! That said if you find you're having too many stability issues try using Clutter from GIT (Thanks MastroPino): -
  • git clone git://git.clutter-project.org/clutter
  • cd clutter
  • ./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr
  • make
  • sudo make install
What's in a name? Awesome! Dont' forget to help choose a name for this feature by voting in our poll @ omgubuntu.co.uk/elementary-needs-you-to-name.html

Nautilus Just Got Gorgeous

View Comments
The Nautilus file-manager included in Ubuntu is... well.. crowded. We already saw some changes developers are taking to tame to the vast areas of wasted space and useless buttons in our over-view of Ubuntu Lucid Alpha 2 and prior to that we drooled over a 'Simplified Nautilus' - which is sadly no longer updated.

Nautilus Just Got Gorgeous

If you seek something even more elegant and tight you may want to install the following patched version of Nautilus by the Elementary Team.
Elementary Nautilus; toolbars merged, stop/reload buttons combined.
Not only does it look nicer - it's stable, a more recent build than that in Ubuntu and... well.. it looks nicer! Look! By merging the toolbars, buttons and breadcrumbs, Elementary Nautilus makes the best use of space. And yes! You can still have your sidebar, too!

Installation

Open a terminal and type the following commands, hitting your return/enter key after each.
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:am-monkeyd/nautilus-elementary-ppa
  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get upgrade
Then either log out and back in to use the new Nautilus or manually do it by pressing Alt+F2 and typing: -
  • pkill nautilus
Now we need to launch nautilus, so press Alt+F2 again, this time entering: -
  • nautilus
To hide/show the "menu bar" as in the screenshot hit Alt+M. To toggle the sidebar use 'F9'. Uninstall instructions If you try it and decide you miss excessive chrome you can install the "old" nautilus in a few clicks.
  1. Remove the above PPA from your sources list (System > Admin > Software Sources > Other Software): -
  2. Then run the following commands: -
  3. sudo apt-get update
  4. sudo aptitude install nautilus

GloobusPreview & CoverGloobus Sneak Peeks

Having to contend with intermittent electricity in my house today means this is likely the only post of the day. So, instead of pushing out something half-baked I thought i'd go the whole-hog and not really say anything at all... ...and just post some new pictures showing of the awesome progress the Gloobus-Preview & CoverGloobus development teams are making with undoubtedly two of the coolest applications around. Clicking on the pictures should take you supersized, but don't roast me if they don't! Enjoy and I'll hopefully be back online tomorrow! Remember you can always send comments, idea, tips and the ilk to joeysneddon [at] gmail [dot] com, or by clicking the "Send Us A Tip" badge somewhere to the right of this post.

Gloobus Getting New Interface, Features [Updated With Screenshots]

View Comments
GloobusPreview sits merrily as one our favourite apps of the year and with todays' announcement that it will be getting a shiny new interface - as mocked up by Dan Rabbit - it looks like it won't be letting go of that title into 2010!

Annoyingly i can't get the new interface to compile. The "New Interface" (which is under development) adds reflection, duration and current time information stamps and some shiny improved close and menu buttons.

Let's take a quick gander: -

New buttons: -

Old docky inside new docky for comparison

Gloobus also adds .psd (Photoshop file) previewing: -

Reflections, timestamps and (eventually) a new button for music previewing!

Install
If you're brave and want to try it out already - you can!

You will need bzr installed, so grab that if you don't already have it.

then simple follow the set-up below: -
  • bzr branch lp:~gloobus-dev/gloobus/newInterface
  • cd newInterface
  • ./autogen.sh
  • make
  • sudo make install
Remember to be helpful and report bugs back @ the launchpad page.

12 Days Of Xmas: Best Apps of 2009 - Day Two

With 2009 drawing to a close we're getting all retrospectical* here at OMG!Ubuntu! (*That's not a real word, but it sounds good.)

Today we present our second favourite application of 2009 - Gloobus Preview.

For those who have yet to hear of Gloobus Preview it is essentially a "file peeker"; allows you to preview pretty much any file by selecting a file then tapping the space key on your keyboard - an elegant window pops up instantly showing you the contents of the selected file.

Like so; here's a python script previewed: -

As i said above, it can preview pretty much every file type you can imagine: -

The last release in October was just a bug fix release, but the 0.4 release in June was a bit more substantial and added a coverflow-esque feature for previewing files.

Install
Add the following PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/gloobus

followed by

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

sudo apt-get install gloobus-preview

The PPA contains a patched version of nautilus with the key-bindings for Gloobus built in. It doesn't deviate in any way other than this and is safe to install.
