MoonLight Silverlight plug-in for Linux hits 7th preview release, still working great

View Comments

Moonlight - the OpenSource implementation of Microsoft's SilverLight technology for Linux OSes - announced the availability of the seventh preview of version 3.0 a few days ago.

Version 3.0 of Moonlight aims to be compatible with Silverlight 3.0. Note that the preview is not polished and lacks support for some areas. Read the full release notes here.

Admittedly, It’s been a very long time since I last blogged about Moonlight - last post was 2008 (!) - but the project provides an extremely important solution for Linux users wishing to view or make use of Silverlight using technologies on the web.  Although many users may not intentionally seek out Silverlight-using applications or sites having the plugin installed anyway will help ensure no-headaches if you do.

The preview plug-in is available for most modern 32bit & 64bit versions of Linux working with both Google Chrome/ium (.crx) & Firefox (.xpi).image

Silverlight For Linux

To view Silverlight embedded content on the web in Linux, simply install the 'moonlight' add-on for Firefox developed by Novell. (Them what make OpenSUSE!). The add-on is being developed with assistance from the hallowed redmond kings themselves (Microsoft, duh!) and will play nice on x32 and x64 bit machines.
