C'mon Mozilla, show me my Firefox icon!

Small issues sometime grate the most and the following bug falls squarely into that category...

Mise en scène
So you've chosen to use a custom theme set - like the fabulous Faenza icon set - because, clearly, you dig the icon style.
The firefox icon my chosen theme uses
You love the look of your new Firefox icon in your the menu and on your dock but, what's this, does Firefox has an icon-ego issue when it comes to other areas?
Alt-switcher; Every app bar firefox adheres to system icon theme
Same applies to system processes
So, what's up?
Yi Sun-sin, who filed the bug report, explains: -

"The process icons are taken from the /usr/lib/firefox-3.6/chrome/icons/default directory, while the launcher icon is taken from the system icon theme, which is chosen by the user, and might provide a custom icon for Firefox.

This can create a lot visual inconsistencies, especially when using a dock that will use the launcher icon."

Sure, this isn't a humongous show-stopping bug, more of a paper-cut, but it's one that wouldn't take much effort to fix. If it narks you head over the bug report and let people know.

Ubuntu fixes 100 paper-cuts for Maverick - Already!

View Comments

A short, sharp and congratulatory post right now as news as reached my ear that  the100 paper cuts initiative for Maverick has hit its goal with a full, fat round 100 ‘cuts’ fixed and released.

Out of the 100 fixes 16 alone were fixed by Bilal ‘bug crusher’ Akhtar, a much championed Ubuntu contributor (and OMG! Ubuntu! IRC! regular so be sure to thank him if you stop by!)

The project is both a notable and important part of the Ubuntu development cycle with the sole aim of fixing small but oft-passed over as trivial bugs that impact on user experience.

As a wise old man* once said: a lot of small things make one awesome thing!

* Actually it was Benjamin who said it, but it sounds good.

100 Papercuts Returns For Lucid

View Comments

David Siegel has posted about the plans for the “100 papercuts” proposals for Lucid Lynx.

For those that don’t know, the 100 papercuts initiative sets out to fix those tiny bugs and trivial user interface issues – i.e. papercuts – that normally get looked over in the grand scheme of things, but which can really hinder a users experience of Ubuntu.

Cuts fixed for Karmic Koala included allowing easy install of fonts, changing the Ethernet icon to better suit the panel and addressing plenty of over-sized dialogs.

‘Cuts that will be salved (not a typo!) in Lucid range from creating a cohesive set of default compiz settings, setting out notification behaviours (priorities, do not disturb, etc), fixing issues in Empathy, Gwibber, Rhythmbox and PiTiVi and, well, a tone more that haven’t yet been found!

F-Spot and Eye-Of-Gnome will also find themselves rubbed in balm to address the removal of GIMP from Lucid.

Round About

As with Karmic there will be 10 rounds of 10 papercuts to “fix”. Each ‘round’ will have a specific theme (such as Gwibber, Compiz, Notifications & Sound/Video.)
