Instant Bird - 'Firefox meets Pidgin' Hybrid chat Client

View Comments
Why do you get when you cross Firefox and Pidgin? InstantBird.

No, That wasn’t a joke without a punchline but an introduction to one of the more interesting applications I’ve tried in a while a while: A messaging client that is a curious hybrid of both Firefox & Pidgin.

InstantBird makes use of the popular libpurple library (as used in Pidgin and Mac client Adium) for connecting to IM services and draws on the Mozilla rendering engine to display messages. By using the well-known bibpurple library the app is able to connect to almost every major chat service, including: -
  • AIM
  • MSN
  • Yahoo! Messenger
  • Google Talk
  • Facebook Chat
  • XMPP
  • Gadu-Gadu
  • ICQ
  • IRC

The result is the familiar feel of Firefox but with the goodness of Pidgin thrown in.

InstantBird 0.2 Beta

As this was my introduction to the application I decided to test out the latest beta version rather than poke around with the year-old Stable release that is known to have many flaws.

First impressions? The app has a reassuringly familiar feel. The account set up handles like in Pidgin, being both simple and straightforward to configure. Better yet I was actually prompted to enter a ‘alias’ (nickname) for my MSN account rather than it just defaulting to my e-mail address!

The contacts list is plain with no avatars or status indicators present. Conversations are tabbed by default and once you’ve got a few open the entire application really starts to resemble Firefox. This vibe continues into the preferences and settings dialogue which is identical in layout to that of current Firefox releases. It’s almost slightly surreal to see different tab headings and options tucked away in such a habitual place.

Conversations themselves are basic with minimal support for emoticons and nothing else fancy. InstantBird also doesn’t provide any feedback indication that your contact is typing - which will suit some as much as it irks others.

Managing InstantBird windows feels like trying to catch a bird! The lack of tray icon for notifications, status changing or minimisation was a bit disappointing - particularly since didn’t register on my dock at all.
On a more positive slant Instant Bird Beta does possess something killer up it’s sleeve: Add-ons.

This Mozilla method of searching, installing and removing extensions is particularly great in this context, letting you ‘personalize your messaging experience’ with total ease - no browser needed!

If you’re interested in seeing what extensions are available before you install check them out @

Purpose

With many other IM clients built around libpurple - and exploiting the feature set to greater potential - most users will find nothing here that isn’t already provided by something else.

The addition of extensions hold promise and there are already some excellent themes available but this minor convenience is more than offset by the dearth of other features.

Download

InstantBird 0.2 Beta can be downloaded @ http://www.instantbird.com/download-0.2b2.html

To run just extract the folder, mark the ‘instantbird’ file inside as executable and then double-click to run.

Elementary Pidgin theme updated

View Comments

Elementary is arguably one of the most popular 3rd party themes available so it can be rather annoying when using an application that don’t follow or fit in with the rest of your desktop theme. Thankfully most of those applications in question support themes or are themeable in some way – just like Pidgin.

Below is MastroPino’s awesome Elementary theme for Pidgin which is sure to please Elementary using Pidgin-ers everywhere: -

Facebook Chat in Pidgin & Empathy With No Plugins!

View Comments
Facebook made their 'Facebook chat' protocol all awesome and nice today by adding support for the Jabber/XMPP protocol. This means you can have facebook chat in Pidgin, Empathy, etc without the need for buggy third-party plugins! Hoorah! Casey Ho, Pidgin dev supremo, blogged the following guide for adding Facebook chat in Pidgin: -
For the protocol type, select XMPP.
For the username, use your Facebook username. (see http://www.facebook.com/username/)
For the domain, use "chat.facebook.com"
For the password, use your Facebook password.
Now in advanced settings set the following:
Uncheck Require SSL
Set connect port to 5222
Set connect server to chat.facebook.com
Empathy In theory the same steps should work on Empathy. Osliner posted the following steps for Empathy in the comments: - Jabber account Login ID: username@chat.facebook.com password: *****word No encryption, and everything else is empty or default. Make sure when you click "Add" in Empathy, that you then select "Reuse existing account" (Thanks to Karl)
Thanks to Ashutosh Rishi for the wake-up call and Casey Ho for the instructions.

Pidgin Preferences Menu Gets A Netbook-happy Makeover

View Comments
Pidgin's preferences menu will be getting a overhaul in time for it's next major release.

Keen to solve the current "bug reports" regarding Pidgin's preferences window not fitting on a netbook sized screen, a plucky Pidgin developer sought to make it more spatially friendly. The result is this: -

Below is the current preferences window as of 2.6.3

You can instantly see the the shift from vertical to horizontal, benefiting the wide-yet-short netbook screens we've all come to squint at.

Other Changes
This re-positioning of the menu showed up many areas of unused and wasted "chrome", or window space, and has resulted in some menu's being merged, some items moving around and some methods of entry changing. All good progress, in my eyes!

Check out the original article in which the developer goes into detail behind the decisions and changes over @ The Flaming Banker.

The new window will land - along with other changes and improvements I'm sure - in the next release of Pidgin, namely 2.6.4.

Facebook Chat Plugin For Pidgin - Working Version

View Comments
The facebook-chat plugin for Pidgin available in Ubuntu's repositories is out-of-date and doesn't work with recent versions of Pidgin spitting out "wrong-credentials" pop-ups and the like.

Instead you'll want to use the most recent version over at the plug-in's Google Code page - which comes in a hand .deb for for easy-peasy one-click installation.

You'll to make sure that you remove any currently installed version of the plugin before  using the updated version.

Not-Empathy Clones
There have been some great 'humanity style' icons for Pidgin made recently, but I've held off on posting them because they either used Empathy icons or were a bit too 'Empathy' like. I wanted to share something different.

Extract the icons to your /usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/

  4. Restart Pidgin
  5. Enjoy!

Pidgin Adds Webcam, Voice Chat And More! - .Debs Inside!

Popular multi-protocol instant messenger Pidgin has added webcam sending/receiving, voice chat, themeing and  file-transfer support on the Yahoo! IM network and all your general clean-ups, memory tweaks and even (finally!) a nice scalable icon!

logo.text-big

Webcam chat is only currently supported on XMPP protocols (Google Chat, Jabber).

This 2.6.1 release isn’t yet available in the Ubuntu repos (it will be at some point), however you can download it at the links below if you’re super impatient!

Ubuntu 64 bit

http://darkstar.ist.utl.pt/getdeb/ubuntu/jaunty/pi/pidgin_2.6.0-1~getdeb1_amd64.deb

Ubuntu 32 bit

http://darkstar.ist.utl.pt/getdeb/ubuntu/jaunty/pi/pidgin_2.6.0-1~getdeb1_i386.deb

Note: it currently seems that Video sending isn’t working in Jaunty because certain lib-purple libraries need updating. Simply add the Pidgin PPA and when the updated versions of libpurple are uploaded, you’ll be prompted to install them.

Alternatively, download & install the .deb files from this awesome post: - http://stemp.wordpress.com/2009/08/20/pidgin-2-6-1-audiovideo/
