PyTask - what's coming in the next release (and how you can help!)

View Comments
It's been a little while since we last mentioned the simple & straightforward task application 'Pytask' so i'm here with a small update and a bit of a favour...

First up what can you look forward to in coming releases?
  • Indicator applet
  • Docky applet (maybe, havent hacked on docky code yet)
  • Ability to fetch and use info from launchpad
  • Some new UI stuff to make it more flexible
  • Working Ubuntu One sync
The developer also had some awesome news for fans of GTG! : -

"Also... we are working to get Pytask and GTG tasks useable between the two apps, so you will be able to access the same tasks from BOTH applications. Since both apps already do this in a similar way, its just a matter of tweaking some code to get it to work."

Where you can help
PyTask, when it adds the indicator applet support, will need a slick monochrome icon in-order to look the part on your Ubuntu desktop. That's where you guys n' girls come in: create a mono icon (both dark and light) for PyTask and we'll put the best ones up here for some final critiquing before PyTask's developer Ryan picks the final one.

Install latest stable release
In the mean time, if you're wondering what all this PyTask malarkey is about, you can install the stable release (without the neat stuff above) using the PyTask PPA: -

  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nisshh/pytask-releases
  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install pytask

PyTask task manager is simple, striaghtforward

View Comments
PyTask is a self-described 'simple task list manager' that orientates itself around providing 'extra features designed for devlopers, programmers & teams'.

On first glance it could be easy to mistake PyTask as 'basic'. It may lack all of the various bling other applications of its ilk provide (such as GTG!) but what helps PyTask stand apart are the broad set of filters available.

Ryan Macnish, the projects' developer, states that his reason for creating PyTask was borne from "...looking for a good task manager for my GNOME desktop, one thing i noticed is that almost all of them have the same set of features. Pytask is my view of how a good simple task manager should work and also a learning project."

The application doesn't come with plug-in support, syncing or a far-flung set of frivolous features instead it focuses on one thing: being usable. For that reason I can't help but recommend it.

Installation
Installing PyTask is preferable via the PyTask PPA (Lucid only): -
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nisshh/pytask-releases
  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install pytask
Once installed PyTask can be launched from the Applications > Accessories sub-menu.
